A New Song
Psalm 33:2-3 (NIV) says, “Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.”
It has always intrigued me – this “new song” theme. I have always loved music. I have always loved to write little poems or “lyrics” that might be used in a song some day. I have also, in my distant past, played several different instruments. I have never, though, written a new song. At least not yet. So what about all of us who have never written a new song? Or those who could not carry a tune in a bucket? Or play an instrument? Does this disqualify us from singing a “new song” to our God? I don’t think so.
First, I don’t think God hears any “bad” notes when we sing, even if our tones are painful to the trained human ear. Second, I’m not sure this “new song” has to be set to music at all. I think it could be a new heart wanting to seek God. A new conviction to follow Him as a disciple. A new venture that He has inspired. I think our very lives – our actions, our thoughts, our attitudes, our emotions, our plans and dreams – everything in us – should seek to sing a new song!
My song isn’t going to sound like yours. My dreams and hopes are not the same as yours. My life-song will look and sound and be very different from yours – as it should be! Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV) says, “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness.” If God’s mercies are new every morning, then my song of thanksgiving and praise should be new every morning too!
Father, thank You for new mercies every morning! Thank You for placing a new song in each one of us on a daily basis – even when we don’t feel like we can sing. Thank You for staying close by, and giving us inspiration in every area of our lives! Amen
